"Quest for Knowledge" is the second episode of the second season of The New Legends of Monkey and the twelfth episode overall. This episode became available on Netflix on 7 August 2020.
Plot synopsis[]
At the Archive of Infinite Scrolls, Monkey and friends must solve — and survive — various riddles to gain access to the Scroll of Knowledge.
Summary[]
Monkey, Tripitaka, Sandy, and Pigsy search for the sacred scrolls, though Pigsy seems more concerned with the seed that is said to save his life one day. Sandy waters it with her finger to ensure it stays hydrated. Pigsy sings to the seed, explaining that it’s positive reinforcement to encourage growth. As Sandy and Pigsy argue over what’s best for the seed, the Librarian comes by and tells them to keep quiet. She shushes them, and they suddenly find their hands glued to their lips and unable to talk.
As Tripitaka translates the scrolls to Monkey, which depict him in an unflattering manner, Sandy and Pigsy attempt to explain that they can’t talk. When Monkey demands that the Librarian free his friends of her spell, she does the same to Monkey — forcing his hand to his lips, making him unable to speak. Tripitaka quietly explains that they’re looking for the sacred scrolls. The Librarian explains that they have 3.4 quintillion scrolls, but of the three ancient scrolls held in the Infinite Archive, one went missing, one is on loan several centuries overdue, and the other one is in closed reserve. Tripitaka asks which one she has. The Librarian replies with a riddle: "It is the answer to every question you’ve got. When you think you have it, you have it not." She leaves and suddenly Monkey, Sandy, and Pigsy can talk again. Tripitaka discovers that the answer is knowledge, meaning they’re looking for the Scroll of Knowledge. A door then opens behind them.
Mothrax infiltrates the Infinite Archive as a fly and eavesdrops on Tripitaka’s shoulder. She then reports her findings to General Khan, Dreglon, Cranius, Gorm, and Tsumori; how the Monkey King is searching for the Sacred Scroll of Knowledge. Cranius asks that the demon council grant him the permission to claim the scroll. As Khan and Dreglon fight over dominance, Cranius prepares to leave for the archive.
Monkey, Tripitaka, Sandy, and Pigsy follow the Librarian to a room filled with color-coded warrior statues. She reads the next riddle: "After the reign of chaos, there is order in the heavens." The statues come alive, proving too powerful for the gods to attack. Tripitaka recalls the riddle and realizes that the warriors have to be defeated in the right order. She adds that it’s the same order of the rainbow and so Monkey, Sandy, and Pigsy attack according to each warrior's color.
Cranius arrives at the Archive. Scribe warns him to leave, but he refuses. As Scribe calculates his attack, Cranius reveals that he can read the language of the gods. He then counters Scribes attack and kills him with a fireball. Not far off, a young boy named Kaedo Zef watches whilst remaining hidden.
The Librarian reads the next riddle: "They can make you laugh or make you cry. You rant run from them, or even hide. You all become one when you die." They are confronted by the Demon Queen Hakuru despite Monkey previously killing her. She charges towards them with her sword. Sandy realizes that the answer to the riddle is "Memories." With that, Hakuru disintegrates.
The four of them proceed further into the Archive, where they find a peach. The Librarian reveals the riddle: "A peach. Just a peach. It is a peach." Monkey, Tripitaka, Sandy, and Pigsy closely analyze the peach.
Cranius has traveled further into the Archive. He’s very aware of how to strike down the warriors, doing it within seconds, much to the Librarian’s disbelief.
Monkey, Tripitaka, Sandy, and Pigsy are joined by Cranius, who reveals the answer to the riddle of the peach. The Librarian forbids Monkey from killing Cranius as much like them, he’s merely a seeker of knowledge. She takes them to the closed reserve. The Librarian tells them that only three of them can face the final challenge along with Cranius. They let Tripitaka decide who will sit out and she chooses Monkey. However, in that decision, the Librarian reveals that they’ve chosen Monkey to face off with Cranius. She spells Tripitaka, Sandy, and Pigsy’s mouth shut before reading the final riddle: "The Scroll of Knowledge is in this very room. Take the wrong one home and your head goes boom."
While Cranius searches, Monkey is only interested in his reflection from the mirror scroll. Cranius believes that the Scroll of Knowledge is the blank scroll and leaves with it. Monkey is upset that they didn’t trust him and chooses to do nothing while Sandy and Pigsy attack, but he predicts their move, knocking them down, as well as Tripitaka. Monkey claims that Cranius left with the wrong scroll and that the real Scroll of Knowledge is the mirror scroll, but Tripitaka realizes that the Librarian actually has the Scroll of Knowledge in her hand.
Cranius returns to General Khan, Dreglon, Mothrax, Gorm, and Tsumori with what he believed to be the Scroll of Knowledge. Having chosen the wrong scroll, his head bursts open as a consequence.
500 years ago, the scroll rolled down the Librarian’s chimney. Over centuries, it inspired her to build the archive. The scroll gave her a long life and the knowledge to protect it. Now, she can rest knowing that she hands the scroll over to its rightful bearer. She hands the Scroll of Knowledge to Tripitaka and turns into dust. Before leaving, Sandy goes back to retrieve the plant. She and Pigsy find that it has started to grow.
Tripitaka asks the Scroll of Knowledge where to find the next sacred scroll. Monkey, Tripitaka, Sandy, and Pigsy continue their search for the next scroll. Unbeknownst to them, they are being followed by Kaedo.
