Season 1

Hope Must Never Die

The Scholar's first official student Gaxin was a true monk who was meant to become Tripitaka but after both the Scholar and Gaxin are killed by the Font Demon, the girl, who later takes the name Tripitaka, comes out from behind the wall to check on Scholar. With his dying breath, he tells her that she must find the Monkey King before handing her Monkey's staff, disguised as a hairpin. The girl proceeds to scale the mountain. She is nearly struck by lightning, which reveals Monkey buried inside.

Without the crown, she cannot awaken Monkey, so she retreats to Palawa and finds a home in a tavern owned by Monica. While serving in the tavern, she notices a strange client. She looks at his reflection and realizes he is the Font demon who killed the Scholar. She takes the Monkey King's crown and hides into a temple where monks agree to hide her by shaving her head and burning her old clothes. She runs away and places the crown on Monkey's head. Monkey saves her from the Font Demon and is fooled by her disguise.

The Edge of Nowhere

Tripitaka tells Monkey that they’re just outside the town of Palawa. He plucks an underarm hair and gives it to her — a gift for her monastery to show thanks for reviving him and keeping his staff safe. He tries to summon his cloud but it doesn’t appear. Tripitaka tells him that they must now retrieve the sacred scrolls and journey West. She warns Monkey that demons have taken over the world during his 500 year imprisonment and that many won’t be happy to hear of his return.

Tripitaka takes him to the tavern. He questions why his crown won’t come off his head. Monica approaches. She doesn’t initially recognize Tripitaka, but asks if she has money to pay for their food. Tripitaka assures her they do. Tripitaka then tells Monkey that the demons have ruled for hundreds of years. Passing off the legends of the Gods as myths. But her master, the scholar, taught her the truth. He was part of a resistance movement to save Monkey, find the sacred scrolls and journey West. Tripitaka believes that’s where the resistance is based. However, she realizes that Monkey isn’t interested in her cause.

Tripitaka returns to the monastery to learn that the demon killed four young monks. She reveals that she’s released the Monkey King and that he even gave her a hair as a reward. The monk explains to Tripitaka that centuries ago, the Monkey King killed one of the ancient Gods and stole the sacred scrolls. It was the Gods, not the demons, whom placed Monkey in stone, to protect the world from his furious power. The monk adds that Scholar was once part of their order many years ago. He developed strange ideas and went searching for answers outside of their teaching. Tripitaka realizes that she Scholar had lied to her for all those years.

Tripitaka returns to the tavern to find Pigsy questioning Monica about the Monkey King. She tells him how he destroyed her tavern and exited swiftly. Pigsy asks if the man was with anyone. She looks over at Tripitaka, peeking from around the corner, and says that the man was alone.

A young boy sitting on his porch notices Tripitaka out alone at night. He warns her that there is a demon on the loose and brings her something to eat. He introduces himself as Zeek. They suddenly find themselves under attack by a pale skinned demon woman. She attacks Zeek with her bladed staff, but he dodges the attack and runs away, with the demon chasing behind him, leaving a trail of blue smoke in her path. Tripitaka loses their trail but finds Monkey. Tripitaka confronts Monkey with the fact that he killed a God and stole the sacred scrolls. He tells her that to every story, there is more than one telling. She asks Monkey where he is going and where the scrolls are. He informs her that he needs to find an old friend and that the scrolls are safe.

Tripitaka is taken by Sandy to her lair. She then asks Tipitaka who she is, to which she replies that she’s merely a monk, but Sandy isn’t convinced. Again, Sandy asks why Tripitaka is in Palawa. When she reveals her name, Sandy bows down to her. The scholar told her that one day a monk named Tripitaka would appear and that Sandy was to help him. Despite Sandy’s appearance, she is not a demon, rather a God. And the boy she was chasing, wasn’t a boy at all, but the Font Demon disguising himself.

Monkey finds her with Sandy, but he initially perceives as a demon. He chokes her with his staff. Tripitaka tells him to stop. She recalls the chant Gaxin performed and recites it, which appears turn cause Monkey pain. He releases Sandy, and Tripitaka explains that she's a god. They are forced to flee Sandy’s lair out of a back entrance as Locke's guards find them. Monkey then tells them about the seven scrolls, each hidden in a different continent. Monkey tries calling his cloud again, but it doesn’t appear. So they hitch a ride with Pigsy instead, who’s disguised as an ordinary villager. Once they get into the back of his carriage, he locks them inside and joins the Font Demon.

The Journey Begins

Tripitaka is taken to the woods by Pigsy, but rather than killing her as ordered by Princess Locke, he sends her off to safety and tells her to never return. She questions why he hasn’t simply killed her. He’s neither demon nor human. So she asks what he is. He raises his rake, calling on the lightning above, and again, he tells her to leave.

Tripitaka sneaks back into Palawa on the back of a wagon. She is being followed by the Font Demon, disguised as a blind man. He chases her down but loses her trail after Pigsy saves her. He tells Tripitaka that she can’t be seen in town as he was given orders to kill her.

Tripitaka tells Pigsy that she’s going back to save her friends. She knows that he’s a god, which is why he didn’t kill her and saved her from the demon. He can’t help his true nature. Pigsy argues that he does a pretty good job of it most days — he sells gods to demons and does whatever else a demon tells him to. Locke told him to kill Tripitaka. Should she find out that he didn’t, they’ll both be killed. Pigsy tries to convince Tripitaka to leave, but she refuses to do so without Monkey and Sandy.

After defeating Locke and the Font Demon, Tripitaka is approached by Monica, who tells her that she will send a sky lantern up in her honor. It blesses the journey of the gods and promises them good spirits, courage, and fortitude. Monica whispers into Tripitaka’s ear to tell her that she’s a good girl and to take care of herself.

Tripitaka, Monkey, Sandy, and Pigsy then set off on their journey west to recover the sacred scrolls.

The Monkey King Returns

Tripitaka, Monkey, Sandy, and Pigsy travel to the Mountain of Fruit and Flowers for the first sacred scroll. Having traveled for days, they take a dip in the lake. All except Tripitaka, who they still believe to be a boy monk. They’re suddenly ambushed by a group of bandits, with the leader, Affe, claiming to be the Monkey King. He claims they protect the King’s relics from demons. Monkey defeats Affe with little difficulty and reveals that he’s, in fact, the Monkey King. Affe and the Monkey Clan chant his name.

After the feast, Tripitaka reminds Monkey that they came to the Mountain of Fruits and Flowers to retrieve the sacred scroll, not build an army. However, Monkey isn’t interested in Scholar and Tripitaka’s rebellion. Enraged by his selfishness, Tripitaka chants to inflict pain on Monkey via his crown. Unbeknownst to the two of them, Affe watches from nearby.

Affe, Jiro, and Bobbo lead Tripitaka, Monkey, Sandy, and Pigsy on the path to the sacred scroll. They come across the ancient fire wasps. It’s up to Bobbo to disarm the trap. He disables the first trap but trips the second trap. While the others fend off the wasps, Affe takes Tripitaka to recover the scroll. He offers her a drink from his bottle, which he claims to mix with forest herbs for maximum hydration.

Affe tells Tripitaka how much he enjoyed being a leader and how he’d do anything to keep it. Tripitaka then begins to speak her mind uncontrollably. He reveals that the drink he gave her is a truth serum. He warns Tripitaka that the truth water can also make you feel dizzy. Affe ties her up and asks for the truth. She reveals that she’s not a monk and that her name isn’t Tripitaka. He intends to have Monkey kill Tripitaka in front of everyone, but he first asks Tripitaka to tell him the chant to control Monkey.

Affe returns with Tripitaka and reveals that his family sold the scroll to a demon generations ago. Affe declares himself the one, true Monkey King and orders Monkey to kill Tripitaka. He performs the chant but nothing happens. Sandy explains that the chant will only work for those righteous and pure of heart. As Affe is about to reveal the truth about Tripitaka, he trips and falls onto a spike. Afterward, Jiro and Bobbo lead them on the path out of the Mountains.

The Breaking Ground

Monkey informs Tripitaka that these scrolls are written in an ancient language. Demons can’t decode it, only gods. However, Tripitaka reveals that the scholar taught her how to read it.

As Monkey and Tripitaka return to camp with firewood, they hear music playing. Suddenly, Monkey freezes in place and becomes completely unresponsive. Tripitaka takes cover at the sound of men approaching. Raxion and his guards load Monkey, Sandy, and Pigsy onto his cart and take them away.

Tripitaka call out to Monkey, Sandy, and Pigsy, but she gets no response. She suddenly bumps into an invisible barrier. Tripitaka watches as Raxion exits the barrier and throws his knife in a fit. While he’s distracted, she sneaks inside. Tripitaka finds Monkey, Sandy, and Pigsy stuck behind a semi-transparent barrier translating the ancient language. She touches the barrier and is projected inside. She tries to pull Sandy’s hand off the barrier and pleads with them to wake up.

Tripitaka binds Pigsy’s hands, causing him to disappear from the table. After successfully waking up Sandy and Pigsy, Tripitaka tries to wake Monkey up but he remains asleep. Sandy explains that they were all playing a game, except Monkey, who wanted to go back and find out the truth. Monkey’s body collapses to the floor. Sandy and Pigsy check on him whilst Tripitaka demands to know what the Shaman did to Monkey. He reveals that Monkey did it to himself and that he went back to revisit his past.

A Crown Does Not Make You King

Tripitaka tries to wake Monkey up but he remains asleep. She asks Shaman and Raxion to help, but it is out of their control. He warned Monkey not to go too deep. Tripitaka continues her best effort to wake Monkey up. Sandy and Pigsy notice Shaman and Raxion leading in more demons. Tripitaka performs the chant, which puts hnnner inside of Monkey’s mind. She tells Monkey to find his way back, but he can’t hear or see her.

Tripitaka watches as Monkey steals the crown from Master’s home and as Monkey is framed by a demon for killing Master. Monkey briefly awakens and asks Tripitaka to help him find his way. She recites the chant and manages to join Monkey in his mind. They go back to the moment that the demon ninja fled. Monkey and Tripitaka follow him and discover that Davari was in fact the killer, who framed Monkey so that he would be imprisoned in stone, allowing for the demons to attack while the gods are at their most vulnerable.

Both Monkey and Tripitaka awaken. Monkey gets to his feet and takes down the demon warriors one-by-one. He then uses his staff to break free of the seal, allowing Tripitaka, Sandy, Pigsy, and himself to escape. Shaman warns him that in doing so, he could contaminate the spaces and destroy everything, but Monkey persists. He then turns his attention to Shaman, who threatens to level the entire area with a bomb. Tripitaka recognizes the device as the one that destroyed her home and encourages Monkey to leave.

Until I Met You

Monkey, Tripitaka, Sandy, and Pigsy flee from the Shaman and Raxion. They enter Kin territory. While escaping persecution, Tripitaka is separated from the group; taken by one of the Kin. He sets a trap for Monkey, Sandy, and Pigsy, lying in wait with an arrow for them to come by. However, he is killed with that very same arrow by Gwen. Monkey and Tripitaka recognize her from his trial. She realizes that she was wrong for sending Monkey away, and she’s spent the last 500 years trying to right that wrong. She then offers to lead them out of the forest.

They manage to escape the Kin, but Tripitaka is shot by a dart in the leg. Tripitaka collapses to the ground. Gwen discovers that she’s been poisoned. She rips Tripitaka's shirt open and discovers that he is actually a she. Gwen keeps this secret from the others. She’s been waiting in the forest for a long time, waiting for the Monkey King to arrive with a warrior monk. However, Tripitaka is neither a warrior nor a monk. Gwen asks Tripitaka who she truly is. Just before passing out, she hands Gwen the letter she had from her mother.

Tripitaka awakens to find Gwen hovering over her. Tripitaka reveals how she was raised by the scholar, and he taught her the ways. When he died, it was as if the world ended. She had to become Tripitaka to release Monkey and save the world. Gwen holds her hand over Tripitaka’s chest and tells her to breathe, seemingly healing her. Tripitaka awakens the following morning perfectly healthy. She is greeted by Monkey, Sandy, and Pigsy. Gwen then tells Tripitaka that the girl in the letter can’t be the one to journey West.

Tripitaka, Monkey, Sandy, Pigsy, and Gwen near the edge of the forest. They can hear the Kin approaching. Gwen takes cover with Tripitaka. Gwen is growing weak. She reveals that she couldn't simply take away the poison that was killing Tripitaka, so she transferred it to herself. Gwen is then knocked to the ground by Raxion. With no means to defend herself, Tripitaka calls out to Monkey. By the time he arrives, Tripitaka has kicked Raxion off a cliff.

Tripitaka, Monkey, Sandy, and Pigsy convene to find Gwen dying from poison. She tells Monkey to protect Tripitaka at all costs. In her final moment, Gwen tells Tripitaka to never deny her true self. Tripitaka then realizes that during her fight with Raxion, he stole her necklace from around her neck, containing the letter written by her mother.

A Part of You That's Missing

Tripitaka writes a note for Monkey, Sandy, and Pigsy before leaving the camp whilst they sleep. Sandy tracks Tripitaka down. She reveals that Monkey was rather upset about her departure. Tripitaka is heading north and doesn’t want Sandy to ask why.

Tripitaka and Sandy arrive at the North Water. Tripitaka is looking for her family. She asks around, but no one seems to pay her much attention. Sandy advises her to take a different approach. So, Tripitaka stands on top of a barrel and quotes the letter that her mother wrote. A woman takes notice but runs off into the trees.

Tripitaka reveals to Sandy that she’s neither a monk nor Tripitaka. The real Tripitaka was killed by a demon. Sandy argues that Tripitaka has done everything that someone with her name was supposed to do, from awakening Monkey to journeying west for the scrolls. Tripitaka recalls Gwen telling her that she had to make a choice and that the girl in Tripitaka’s mother’s letter couldn’t be the one to journey west. Sandy doesn’t believe it was a coincidence that Tripitaka’s mother left her at the scholar’s doorstep. They track the woman down. She has two daughters and reveals that they are Tripitaka’s sisters.

Meera introduces herself to Tripitaka and Sandy. Her daughters are Ilbryn and Brylana. Meera thought about coming back for Tripitaka many times, but she was certain that Tripitaka would have a better life with Scholar, which she did. Sandy wonders why Meera came back to the North Water. Meera claims after they fled the raids, their plan was to head to the Gandara Sea. But her mother became ill. She wanted to return to the place of her birth before she died. However, Sandy is skeptical, so Tripitaka recommends that she go look after the children.

Meera offers Tripitaka a chance to join them on their travels to the Gandara Sea, where they can hopefully build a home, but Sandy remins suspicious. Tripitaka wants Sandy to let her go, though Sandy insists that Meera is a liar. Tripitaka begs Sandy to stop and asks why is she trying to take this from her. Tripitaka claims that she can feel that Meera is her mother. Sandy wishes Tripitaka well and leaves.

Tripitaka leaves with Meera for the Gandara Sea. However, Meera has a change of heart; she reveals to Tripitaka that she’s not her mother and that the demons have arranged a trap for her. They threatened to take her girls if she didn’t play along. She warns Tripitaka to leave immediately, but the Font Demon is already approaching. Tripitaka agrees to leave with him peacefully. Before parting ways, she makes Meera promise that she’ll take Ilbryn and Brylana to the Gandara Sea. Lastly, Meera tells Tripitaka that her mother would’ve been proud of the woman she’s become, and she hopes her girls will grow up to be as strong. The Font Demon tosses Meera a bag of coins before leaving.

Tripitaka is taken to Jade Mountain and introduced to Davari.

In Search of Tripitaka

Davari takes Tripitaka to see the gods he has acquired. He has them unknowingly translating. In their minds, they’re working in the ancient library of the gods. However, a god’s mind will always find a way to resist, whilst a human mind, much like Tripitaka’s, is much easier to manipulate.

Davari questions why Tripitaka isn’t translating the scrolls. He threatens to throw her into the abyss at the bottom of the palace should she refuse. Even as the guards lift Tripitaka by her feet and threaten to throw her over, she refuses to translate the scrolls. Davari orders his men to stop and to bring her back. Tripitaka notices that Davari is hurt, deducing that he is ill, which is why he needs her to translate the scroll. He corrects Tripitaka; he’s not ill. He’s old but would like to become immortal. Tripitaka’s refusal persisted. Instead of throwing her owner into the abyss, they throw a god over instead. Everyday she refuses to translate the scroll, another god will be thrown into the abyss. On the ground, Tripitaka finds a piece of paper.

Tripitaka is taken to her cell. There, she opens up the piece of paper she found. Inside, is a lock of hair. Later that night, Monkey uses an invisibility elixir to break Tripitaka out. Tripitaka reveals that she’s a girl. Tripitaka then informs Monkey that the sacred scroll Davari has will grant immortality, and if Tripitaka doesn’t translate for him, Davari will kill more gods. So she wants to stay and stop Davari from the inside.

Tripitaka is handed the last piece of the scroll to translate. Lior sits right behind her. He tells Tripitaka to never stop fighting. Tripitaka takes the scroll and locks the guards inside the hall, where Lior defends the door. Just outside the door, she comes face-to-face with Davari. Unfortunately, Tripitaka has dropped the scroll. Davari offers her a chance to either run away or die fighting him for the scroll.

A Hero to Save Us All

Davari claims that the scroll belongs to him. Tripitaka kicks it under the door and flees in the opposite direction.

Tripitaka finds Lior and the other gods in a cell. He tells her to leave them. She must stop Davari. They’ve given her the means of control. Lior insists that she has all the answers she needs.

Tripitaka hides inside a cell, where she finds Davari’s sentinel demons on standby. Sandy then joins her after taking out a guard. Rather than killing the demons, Tripitaka wants to wake them up. Tripitaka fails to awaken the sentinel demons. Sandy remarks that it’s a magic spell, which requires ingredients. Tripitaka recalls what Lior said about giving her the means of control, referring to the lock of god hair that she recovered. She throws it into the fire and awakens the Font Demon as well as the other sentinels.

Tripitaka and Sandy arrive at the banquet with Font Demon and a small army of sentinels. A battle ensues. She goes chasing after Davari. Monkey finds them in Davari's chamber performing the immortality spell. However, Shaman has Tripitaka. She encourages Monkey to stop Davari. As he inches towards Davari, Shaman sends Tripitaka flying over the balcony, down to the abyss. Monkey jumps off the balcony after her. He saves her by conjuring his cloud. Monkey charges towards Davari, but he is far too powerful. He incapacitates Monkey, Sandy, and Pigsy. Shaman then activates one of the suction devices that engulfed Tripitaka’s home. She grabs it and throws it at Davari. It latches onto his chest and imprisons him inside. He struggles to fight his way out, but instead goes flying off the balcony. Now that her secret is out, Monkey asks what they should call her. She replies "I’m Tripitaka."

Season 2

Graveyard of the Gods

Tripitaka, Monkey, Sandy, and Pigsy are being hunted by Kimura and a an army of demons after killing Davari and escaping with the Immortality Scroll. The others stay behind to fight off the demons whilst Tripitaka tries to escape with the scroll. Kimura chases her down and grabs the scroll. Monkey knocks him to the ground, and he and Tripitaka escape with the gods they rescued from Davari.

Monkey fails to retrieve the Scroll from the Infinite Archive on his own. His hands are removed by a Scribe guarding the Archive. Tripitaka is reluctant to use the Immortality Scroll to regenerate Monkey’s hand, but they don’t have any other option, so they start by searching for a pepper bud flower. Whilst Monkey, Tripitaka, and Sandy search for the flower, Pigsy is on guard. They cross paths with a woman named Mycelia, who explains that the forest has special herbs that can’t be found anywhere else. She reveals that they’re standing in the Graveyard of the Gods. Pigsy arrives with the flower. Mycelia tells him that he shouldn’t have picked a pepper bud flower. One has to pull it up by the roots. A mist-like substance leaves the flower, and the four of them suddenly start to sneeze before passing out.

Once Monkey’s hands have been restored, he, Tripitaka, Sandy, and Pigsy journey to the Archive of Infinite Scrolls, where Scribe guards the entry. He uses a spell to attack them with knives, arrows, hammers, stones, and wind. Monkey launches his staff at the Scribe and knocks him down. Scribe apologies and allows them entry. They enter the Archive. The door locks behind them and eventually disappears all together.

Quest for Knowledge

Tripitaka translates the scrolls to Monkey. They depict him in an unflattering manner. Sandy and Pigsy attempt to explain that they can’t talk. When Monkey demands that the Librarian free his friends of her spell, she does the same to Monkey — forcing his hand to his lips, making him unable to speak. Tripitaka quietly explains that they’re looking for the sacred scrolls. Tripitaka asks which one she has. The Librarian replies with a riddle: "It is the answer to every question you’ve got. When you think you have it, you have it not." She leaves and suddenly Monkey, Sandy, and Pigsy can talk again. Tripitaka discovers that the answer is knowledge, meaning they’re looking for the Scroll of Knowledge. A door then opens behind them.

They follow the Librarian to a room filled with color-coded warrior statues. She reads the next riddle: "After the reign of chaos, there is order in the heavens." The statues come alive, proving too powerful for the gods to attack. Tripitaka recalls the riddle and realizes that the warriors have to be defeated in the right order. She adds that it’s the same order of the rainbow and so Monkey, Sandy, and Pigsy attack according to each warrior's color.

The four of them proceed further into the Archive, where they find a peach. The Librarian reveals the riddle: "A peach. Just a peach. It is a peach." Monkey, Tripitaka, Sandy, and Pigsy closely analyze the peach. They are joined by Cranius, who reveals the answer to the riddle of the peach. She takes them to the closed reserve. The Librarian tells them that only three of them can face the final challenge along with Cranius. They let Tripitaka decide who will sit out and she chooses Monkey. However, in that decision, the Librarian reveals that they’ve chosen Monkey to face off with Cranius. She spells Tripitaka, Sandy, and Pigsy’s mouth shut before reading the final riddle: "The Scroll of Knowledge is in this very room. Take the wrong one home and your head goes boom."

While Cranius searches, Monkey is only interested in his reflection from the mirror scroll. Cranius believes that the Scroll of Knowledge is the blank scroll and leaves with it. Monkey is upset that they didn’t trust him and chooses to do nothing while Sandy and Pigsy attack, but he predicts their move, knocking them down, as well as Tripitaka. Monkey claims that Cranius left with the wrong scroll and that the real Scroll of Knowledge is the mirror scroll, but Tripitaka realizes that the Librarian actually has the Scroll of Knowledge in her hand.

Tripitaka, Monkey, Sandy, and Pigsy continue their search for the next scroll after retrieving the Scroll of Knowledge.

Village of Lost Children

They continue their journey for the next sacred scroll. They reach a village, where they learn that the villagers are being hassled by the squid demon, Lady Tsumori. They awaken the following morning as Sandy is accused of stealing children in the night, but they insist they're innocent. As Tripitaka and Sandy walk through the village, Sandy discovers that kids are drawing frightening pictures of her. She questions why.

Tripitaka awakens from her sleep to find Sandy moving throughout the village. However, she looks over and also sees Sandy sleeping next to her. And so Tripitaka goes to investigate. She suddenly finds herself confronted by a Kaedo. The boy bests her in a fight and then explains that he’s an ally. He tells her that they’ve been tricked into turning the village into a trap and instructs her to continue her quest. He’s been following since the Graveyard of the Gods. He then gives her a Fangkris blade, explaining that it has a poison tip. Several of the village women exit their homes, screaming for help as their babies are missing. They blame Sandy for stealing them.

Tripitaka reveals to Monkey, Sandy, and Pigsy that they’ve been trapped. She was warned by a young boy after seeing Sandy’s doppelgänger. She shows them the Fangkris blade he gave her, forged from the teeth of dragons with a poison tip. Tripitaka wants to escape, but Sandy refuses to leave without finding the children first.

Tripitaka stands guard and protects the children. Tsumori arrives disguised as Sandy. She knocks Tripitaka to the ground and takes one of the children, threatening to drop the child down the well should Tripitaka refuse to tell her about the scrolls. Tsumori wants to know why Davari and Cranius desired them. She spits black ink in Tripitaka’s face, takes the scrolls from around her shoulder before escaping down the well. The villagers accuse Tripitaka of working with Sandy to take their children and surround her. Kaedo comes to her aid and they both retreat inside the cage.

Tripitaka and Kaedo are trapped by the villagers. Thankfully, Monkey, Sandy, and Pigsy return with the missing kids.

Tripitaka reveals that the scroll wants them to go back to take the other fork. Monkey asks Kaedo where he got the Fangkris blade. Kaedo reveals that it belonged to his father, and his father's father. He decides to join them on their quest for the other scrolls.

Puppet Master

Tripitaka, Monkey, Sandy, Kaedo, and Pigsy travel through the Valley of Despair in search for the Scroll of Creation. Mothrax releases a gas that makes Tripitaka, Monkey, Sandy, and Pigsy overly affectionate. While they’re distracted with each other, Mothrax retrieves the Scrolls of Immortality and Knowledge. However, when Sandy sprays Tripitaka, Monkey, and Pigsy with water, the potion wears off.

As Mothrax escapes with the sacred scrolls, Hagfish trips her and binds her with rope. Tripitaka, Monkey, Sandy, Kaedo, and Pigsy arrive, and Hagfish pretends to be a helpless victim. He claims that he’s a puppeteer who only desires to create a puppet show about a legendary hero such as Monkey. He then offers to lead them to the road.

Whilst every sleep, Hagfish takes Monkey’s staff from his hair and stabs Tripitaka with a pin, transferring her soul into a Tripitaka puppet, thus allowing him to gain control of her body. The following morning, Tripitaka awakens Monkey, Sandy, Pigsy from their sleep to inform them the scrolls are missing. Hagfish controls Tripitaka into saying that it was Kaedo who stole the scrolls. They find the scrolls under his pillow and force him to leave.

Hagfish uses Tripitaka to ask the Scroll of Knowledge how to puppet a god and how to create his own god for evil. She reveals that he would need the Scroll of Creation. They come to a crossroads. Pigsy would like to part ways with Hagfish, but Tripitaka comes to his offense and tells Pigsy to clear obstacles ahead. Monkey and Sandy are unsure of what to do and start to suspect that Pigsy is right and that Tripitaka isn’t herself. They ask Tripitaka about the scrolls, but she hasn’t a clue what they’re referring to as she’s being controlled by Hagfish, who then notices Kaedo watching them and claims that he’s after the scroll.

Hagfish no longer needs Tripitaka and tries to kill her via her doll, but Kaedo intervenes. He throws a ninja star in Hagfish’s chest and knocks him to the ground. As Kaedo helps Tripitaka up, Hagfish makes her stab him with the Fangkris blade. Kaedo is poisoned and falls unconscious, but not before removing the pin from Tripitaka’s neck, thus giving her full control of herself. Monkey and Sandy return. Gorm arrives soon thereafter with Pigsy, who is barely conscious and attacks Monkey and Sandy. Tripitaka notices that Kaedo has disappeared. She then uses Mothrax' love gas, forcing Gorm and Hagfish to flee with the scrolls.

Finding Paradise

Monkey, Tripitaka, and Sandy wheel Pigsy on a cart. Sandy’s plant starts to wither as they continue down the path to the Scroll of Creation. However, it starts to bloom as they head down the right path, the path that'll save Pigsy. The flower leads them to Mycelia, who heals Pigsy. Tripitaka blames herself for Kaedo’s death and losing Monkey’s staff as well as the scrolls. Mycelia assures her that it’s not her fault and that it isn’t her responsibility to carry the weight of the world.

Tripitaka seems to become distracted from their mission. Sandy finds her with two of the village girls and reminds her of the scrolls. Tripitaka appears to be in some kind of trance, but Sandy awakens her from it by reminding Tripitaka of Kaedo. Tripitaka and Sandy find Monkey, who is being treated like a celebrity by the villagers. They try to get him to remember their mission, but he has the guards take them away. In hopes of forcing Monkey to remember, Tripitaka performs the Headache Sutra, which causes him to regain his memory and join Tripitaka and Sandy.

Tripitaka, Monkey, and Sandy find the Scroll of Creation, but they are confronted by Mycelia. She refuses to willingly give them the scroll and calls her “children” to defend it. They discover her children are actually mushroom people/fungal creatures. With the death of each one, Mycelia feels heartache. As Monkey fights off the mushroom people, Sandy demands that Mycelia release the scroll as Tripitaka can’t seem to retrieve it from inside the tree. Tripitaka calls out to the Scroll of Creation and summons a saw to cut the scroll free, however, she hurts her hand in the process. In retrieving the scroll, Mycelia disappears. Sandy goes to free Pigsy while Monkey and Tripitaka escape.

Gladiators

Tripitaka and Monkey wait for Sandy and Pigsy to join them, but they are under attack. Monkey catches an arrow fired in their direction. However, their attacker is merely a young boy named Chou. He takes them to the camp, where his family has been taken hostage by the Blue Hand demon army. Monkey comes up with an idea for him and Tripitaka to disguise themselves as two farmers so that they can infiltrate the army. Tripitaka fears that something is wrong with the Scroll of Creation. It’s meant to be written in the ancient language, but it seems like Mycelia translated it. Tripitaka believes that the saw she summoned with the scroll was deliberately made to hurt her. However, Tripitaka needs boots if she’s to pass as a farmer, so Monkey encourages her to use the scroll to summon a pair.

Tripitaka and Monkey join the Blue Hand and convene in a village with Sandy and Pigsy. Moggoth separates the villagers into pairs and orders them to fight to the death. However, Monkey and Tripitaka refuse. Dreglon demands for Monkey to kneel and orders Tripitaka to fight. He raises his axe to kill Monkey, who punches Dreglon and sends him flying several feel into the air. General Khan intervenes after hearing their story and learning that their farm was attacked by the Monkey King. She demands that Tripitaka and Monkey are brought to her tent.

Khan questions Tripitaka and Monkey regarding the circumstances of their encounter with the Monkey King. Satisfied with their help, she wants Tripitaka and Monkey to become her servants. However, Dreglon insists that Monkey and Tripitaka belong to him. As Monkey and Tripitaka exit their tent, Sandy, under her ruse as Lady Wrathbone, demands that they help her and Pigsy serve gruel. Tripitaka takes off the boots she summoned with the scroll to see that both of her feet are infected.

Dreglon and Khan have come to an agreement. Monkey will fight Khan’s champion and prove the Blue Hand are real soldiers. But if he loses, the Hand will become servants for Khan’s Red Guard. Tripitaka prepares Monkey for his fight and reminds him that he’s supposed to be a human. He then faces off with Kaedo. Tripitaka tells Monkey to stay down but he continues to fight Kaedo. With Monkey refusing to stand down, Tripitaka performs Headache Sutra to force him down. And with that, the Red Guards take control of the Blue Hand.

Masterchef

Kaedo knocks Dreglon out with poisoned ale and frees Tripitaka. Kaedo intends to take her to Lion Heart Rock, where the rebels await her arrival. However, Quiver and another guard block the exit. Mothrax then arrives with a message for Khan.

Tripitaka, Monkey, Sandy, Kaedo, and Pigsy plot their next move. Kaedo reveals that the rebels have gathered at Lion Heart Rock. But Tripitaka and Monkey want to see what is inside the gold envelope Mothrax brought to Khan. They then watch as Dreglon is apprehended for drinking and sleeping on duty.

Tripitaka wishes to destroy the corrupt Scroll of Creation. Sandy puts it in the fire for several hours but it doesn’t even have so much as a mark. Valet enters, he tells Tripitaka to leave.

Monkey and Kaedo plot with Tripitaka to take out Khan’s valet. As the valet takes care of Khan’s laundry, Kaedo shoots him with a dart, allowing Tripitaka to steal his clothes. Pigsy feeds Khan while Monkey and Kaedo help Tripitaka break into her safe to steal the gold envelope, but when Khan kicks everyone out so that she may be alone with Pigsy, they are forced to leave empty handed.

After Monkey, Kaedo, and Pigsy fail to break into Khan's safe, Tripitaka sneaks inside and reads the letter within the gold envelope. Gorm then enters the tent and tells Tripitaka to help remove his clothes. In doing so, she discovers that he has at least a half a dozen of Hagfish’s pins in his back.

Tripitaka and Dreglon assist Gorm with putting on his armor. Tripitaka finds Monkey’s staff in his hair. Just as she realizes that Hagfish is controlling Gorm, Hagfish recognizes Tripitaka and commands Gorm to kill her. Tripitaka runs out the tent and regroups with Sandy and Monkey. She reunites Monkey with his staff, combats Gorm, and escapes.

The Real Tripitaka

Tripitaka is taken to Lion Heart Rock by Monica and meets with Gaxin, the real Tripitaka. He tells her that nothing is impossible despite seeing her die. Gaxin wants to take over the quest, and with Monkey, gather the remaining scrolls. Gaxin shows Tripitaka drawings of the guardians of the scrolls. Mycelia is among them. Tripitaka calls her a false guardian as Mycelia created a decoy scroll, which is corrupted. Gaxin takes the scrolls and insists that he can handle it.

Dreglon is tortured for answers regarding Gorm and his impending attack. He reveals that Gorm keeps the scrolls with him at all times. When Tripitaka asks about Hagfish, Dreglon simply refers to him as a parasite. He explains that they can’t win without taking out Gorm.

Tripitaka tells Monica that Gaxin is wrong. Dreglon tried to convince her to throw all their force at Gorm, but he’s lying. Hagfish is the real mastermind. Tripitaka fears that Gaxin will get them killed, but Monica tells her to know her place. Kaedo, who Monica refers to as "bounty hunter," has come to collect his payment. As it turns out, he was hired to bring Tripitaka to Lion Heart Rock.

Tripitaka confronts Kaedo for lying to her. He claims that it was simply business. She accuses Kaedo of knowing that Gaxin was planning on taking Monkey, Sandy, and Pigsy away from her, which is true. He reveals that the demons offered him a bigger bounty, which he considered until he actually met Tripitaka. And then he changed his mind.

Gaxin plans his attack with the rebels, but Tripitaka reveals that Gorm doesn’t have the scrolls and that he is, in fact, Hagfish’s servant. He controls Gorm like a doll, but Gaxin and Monica doubt that she’s correct. Tripitaka reminds Gaxin that they don’t have enough weapons to fight Gorm’s army, but Gaxin has used the Scroll of Creation to make weapons. Tripitaka warns him that the weapons will turn on them. However, both Monica and Gaxin remind her who the real Tripitaka is.

Monica hires Kaedo for another job — to take Tripitaka to Palawa. She gives him her key to her tavern in Palawa and instructs him to give it to Tripitaka, but she doesn’t want it. A fight ensues, but Kaedo is superior. He tells Tripitaka that they leave at first light. Unbeknownst to Kaedo, Tripitaka stole his compass during the fight.

After taking Kaedo’s compass, Tripitaka glues one of Hagfish’s pins to the back of her neck as if she’s under his control. With Sandy’s help in diverting the guards, Tripitaka puts a tracker in Dreglon armor and sets him free. She claims to be Hagfish and tells Dreglon to return to him. Sandy and Pigsy accompany Tripitaka as she tracks Dreglon. Monkey joins them and Kaedo parts ways.

The Spider Web

Tripitaka, Monkey, Sandy, and Pigsy have tracked Dreglon to the Broken Temple. Monkey reveals that god powers don’t work at the Broken Temple. Before he killed Demon Queen Hakuru, she put a curse over the temple. They enter the Broken Temple and sneak past the guards. They are spotted by Mothrax. Pigsy lights a fire, and she transforms into a moth and flies directly into the flame.

Monkey confronts Hagfish and demands that he hand over the sacred scrolls. Monkey proposes a swap to keep him distracted while Tripitaka sneaks over to the box with all of the puppets inside. Hagfish approaches Monkey and agrees to his proposition. However, he double crosses Monkey and orders his men to attack. After dispatching the guards, Monkey kills Dreglon. However, Hagfish then uses the Scroll of Creation to bind Monkey and Tripitaka with ropes. Pigsy attempts to distract Hagfish long enough for Sandy to grab the scrolls, but they fail as well.

Tripitaka, Monkey, Sandy, and Pigsy are strung up in the chamber. Tripitaka blames Monkey for ruining the plan. Hagfish intends to create an evil god. He lowers Monkey down and takes a lock of hair. He attaches the hair to a Monkey doll and places the doll inside a barrel of black goo in hopes of creating an evil version of Monkey with the corrupt Scroll of Creation. Gorm returns with Monica in hand. Monkey kicks him to the ground and Monica removes the pins. As she attempts to remove the final pin, Gorm kills her. With a single pin remaining in Gorm, Cranius decides to remove it. Gorm is free of his control. Shadow Monkey intervenes. As he and Gorm battle, Monkey, Tripitaka, Sandy, and Pigsy escape with all the immortality and knowledge scrolls.

Shadow Boxing

Tripitaka, Monkey, Sandy, and Pigsy discuss their next move. Monkey proposes they ask where to find the real Tripitaka. The scroll tells them to travel to where earth, wind, fire, and water meet. Tripitaka suspects that it must be the Burnt Sands. However, they find themselves near a village under attack by Hagfish and Shadow Monkey.

Tripitaka, Sandy, and Pigsy catch up to Monkey, who is face-to-face with Shadow Monkey. He has grown tired of taking orders from Hagfish and kills him. He now looks to Monkey to kill Tripitaka. When Monkey refuses, Shadow Monkey departs on his own.

They find Gaxin. Admittedly, he ruined everything. They tell him that he can redeem himself by leading them to the Scroll of Creation. But they’re going to camp out in the woods for the night and make way for Burnt Sands at day break.

Tripitaka, Monkey, Sandy, Gaxin, and Pigsy travel to the Burnt Sands, where they are greeted by Mycelia, who is the Guardian of the Scroll of Creation. She reveals the scroll is beneath the tree. Gaxin crawls inside but he can’t reach the scroll. Mycelia traps Gaxin inside and declares that the scroll belongs to her. For 500 years, she’s tended to her garden and refuses to allow them to take it. If she hands over the scroll then she will perish. While Pigsy helps Gaxin, Monkey, Tripitaka, and Sandy fight off the fungal creatures and Timothee.

Shadow Monkey arrives at Burnt Sands and takes Tripitaka. Monkey follows him through the portal to the Broken Temple. With no powers, Monkey is forced to rely on skill, but Shadow Monkey is too powerful. When Monkey refuses to kill Tripitaka, Shadow Monkey offers to do it himself. Monkey tells Shadow Monkey to stop as he will join him. He claims that he owes the gods nothing and that Tripitaka will spend the rest of her days knowing she failed. He then pulls Shadow Monkey in for a hug, grabs the shadow Scroll of Creation and crushes it, bringing Shadow Monkey great pain. Before leaving, he tells Monkey he will return the favor and take his scroll.

Monkey and Tripitaka return to Burnt Sands on his cloud. He tells Shadow Monkey to return to the shadows or else he’ll tear the scroll in half. Mycelia reveals that the only way to destroy the Shadow Scroll is to fly it into the sun. Monkey hands the Scroll of Immortality and Knowledge over to Tripitaka and flies away on his cloud. Tripitaka chants and performs the Headache Sutra to bring him back but he continues his journey. With the Shadow Scroll, Monkey flies into the sun and kills Shadow Monkey. Tripitaka pleads with Mycelia to give her the Scroll of Creation. Mycelia does so and dies. With the scroll, Tripitaka wants to bring Monkey back, but Gaxin warns Tripitaka of the consequences of her actions. He tells her that the world needs her much more than it needs him. He then chants the ancient language before dying.

Relationships[]

Monkey[]

Main article: Monkey and Tripitaka

Their relationship started out rocky since they kept arguing and he wasn't following her orders. She used the Crown Sutra on him willingly, cognizant that it would cause him pain and anguish. She did feel very guilty about it, but she started to use it more and more often, for unknown reasons. This was a speedbump in their relationship and caused a rift between them. This made Monkey feel less like a God and more like a puppet. But their bond grew more as they were able to communicate easily with each other and come to terms. When Tripitaka learned of his past in A Crown Does Not Make You King, she became more sympathetic towards Monkey. They started to hold hands, and she told him that she was with him. Both of each other go to the ends of the earth to save one another and show commitment in their relationship.

In Season 2, Tripitaka teaches Monkey how to write in the god language, and does not use the Crown Sutra as much. She is very kind to him, and they communicate with one another whenever they come to a disagreement. Monkeys' loyalty to Tripitaka falters and it creates a rift in their relationship. But he is not hesitant to side with her again. In Shadow Boxing, they argue often, but Tripitaka becomes mournful of his death, begging to bring him back.
